In a way, "January Reflections" is borne of failure. I had worked for multiple sessions in a cold wintry canyon in Montana on a larger oil painting, only to realize the composition was awkward. Back in the studio, I sketched out a new idea, switched from oil to pastel, and came up with "January Reflections."
