Styles of Acrylic Painting Acrylic paint is a form of synthetic resin that dries quickly and has both the bold, deep shine and gloss associated with oil painting and the bright transparency of watercolor. The paints are immensely flexible and easy to work with, making them a firm favorite with modern artists. Modern acrylic painting takes many forms. Due to its versatility, it can be mixed easily with other media, making abstract acrylic painting extremely popular. Realistic acrylic painting is also commonplace, as details are easy to pick out. Acrylic paint was only invented in the 1940s, so contemporary acrylic painting styles dominate. It was a hugely popular technique during the 1960s, and played a prominent role in Pop Art, Optical Art, and color field painting. Subjects in Acrylic Painting The main advantage of acrylic paint over oil paint is its fast-drying properties. It makes it incredibly versatile and portable, meaning that the subject matter of acrylic paintings is almost limitless! Acrylic flower painting is often favored by those new to the form, as flowers are a beautiful and colorful subject, brought to life with acrylic paint. Natural themes abound in acrylic painting due to how easy the paint is to work with, making landscapes, trees, the ocean, and mountains popular subjects. Materials Used in Acrylic Painting Acrylic paint is an extraordinarily flexible medium and, depending on the dilution, can resemble gouache, oil painting, and even watercolor. The paint itself is a mixture of pigment and acrylic polymer emulsion, with various stabilizers and plasticizers to create a fast-drying effect. Acrylic painting on canvas is the most common form, but acrylic paint can bond with almost any surface or material. Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein used acrylic paint extensively in their work.
