About Still life paintings

Styles of Still Life Paintings Still life paintings are a classic genre that can show off a painter’s technique, unique style and point of view. Highly skilled painters from Baroque to Contemporary eras have used still lifes to study light, hone their talents, and show the beauty of shape and form. Historical pieces like Baroque and Renaissance still life paintings give insight into people’s daily lives and priorities during those times. Dutch still life paintings were popular during the Dutch Golden Age as showcases of a painter’s technical skill and social commentaries. Modern and contemporary still lifes subvert the realist ideas of earlier eras with styles ranging from delicate minimalism to colorful Cubism. Abstract still life paintings bring conceptual thoughts, feelings or ideas into the forefront. Subjects in Still Life Paintings The beauty of a still life painting is often in the simplicity of its subject. Everyday objects like a bowl of fruit or a basket of flowers can create a compelling still life scene. Fruit still life paintings are popular and classically depict apples, oranges or lemons in a fruit bowl. Beyond the basics, painters have used any combination of grapes, watermelon, pears and other fruit in still life paintings. Vanitas still life paintings are especially symbolic, commenting on the fleeting nature of life and inevitability of death. Whether symbolic or prosaic, still life objects can range from the everyday, like a ceramic bowl, to the sumptuous, like lobster or a plate of oysters accompanied by spiral-peeled lemon. Materials Used in Still Life Paintings Still life pieces, like many others, are often done as sketches, studies or in series. Sketches of still lifes can be pencil or charcoal drawings. Balance, composition, and form take precedence as sketches are incorporated into paintings. Watercolor still lifes are beautiful examples of still life paintings, with delicate layers creating the balance the genre is known for. Famous Artists of Still Life Paintings Still life paintings are a classic genre that many painters throughout history have used to express their own personal style. Famous still life paintings are hallmarks of every era, but the most well-known still life painter is probably the post-Impressionist Paul Cézanne. Cézanne’s still lifes and other works laid the foundations for later Expressionist and Fauvist pieces. Painters like Henri Matisse and Vincent van Gogh credit previous still lifes with their freedom to express and create the styles they are so well known for. Modernist still life is best known in the work of Pablo Picasso. Picasso created still life paintings throughout periods of his work, moving through multiple styles in modern art.
