NAME / Marcelo Daldoce
BORN / 1979
LIVES AND WORKS IN / New York City
ABOUT / Originally from the countryside of Brazil, I have undertaken many migrations in my life, first to the city of São Paulo, then to America. This implied a constant state of adaptation, in which my cultural identity was in a permanent state of construction and challenge. As someone who doesn’t feel I belong anywhere, artmaking is a means of exploring and also claiming my identity through the significance of the places I go. I paint the sublime as a kind of fantastical realm to escape, and I like making a better world for myself, as a kind of therapy, or meditation. Representational painting allows me to inhabit those places in a sense, even if it is for a short while, but always completely.
