Description
Description
The painting is a portrait of my sister Cameal. I remember as children growing up she had the darkest skin compared to her sisters. She mentioned at one point that she was born white but got darker due to the sun. This statement is popular especially within cultures that were colonized. Through the painting I wanted to bring awareness of the struggle to fit in and the obsession with been the other. Integrating elements such as the ruff collar that represents aristocracy and class structure. juxtaposed with the figure against a tropical background I wanted to place the figure in a space that is seen as a paradise by outsiders but to the inhabitants it represents a space where their is an ongoing struggle with identity.
