Angels for Giotto, 2021
Painting
48" H x 24" W
SOLD
"Angels for Giotto" is an homage to Giotto's murals in the Scrovegni Chapel. This painting depicts brugmansia flowers, otherwise known as angel's trumpets, floating on a lapis lazuli background. Lapis pigment was used by Giotto to represent heaven in the vaulted chapel ceiling, and his expressive angels in the chapel are world-renowned. I find an otherworldly beauty in flowers and Renaissance paintings, and seek endless inspiration in both. Many of my paintings are love letters to my favorite artists (which is another way to say I steal ideas of color harmonies and composition from those that came before me). This one is for Giotto, a humble token of gratitude for the beauty he gave the world.
