Francisco Donoso

Once a Clown, Always a Clown, 2022

Through painting, I explore the fence/border as an architecture of play, care, transformation, and possibility to subvert its power as a symbol and structure of violence, dislocation and trauma. Through an intuitive process of layering paint and other media, I explore the potential of abstraction to make meaning and logic. Through spatial illusions, color, pattern and form I build spaces that feel both familiar and speculative. The chain-link fence becomes architectural, standing in color fields of illusory space that both ground and reject it. The dimensional spaces move in and out of legibility, going from flat planes of color to modulated forms casting shadows and kissed by ambiguous light sources. They suggest the familiarity of real spaces, archways and tunnels, but deny the viewer an easy explanation.
