The Wind and the Waves, 2023
Painting

In many of my paintings, I tend to find myself circling around the motif of wave-like marks, the sea, or water in general – and this piece is an example. In moments of working through anxiety, I’ve found myself often returning to Biblical stories involving waves. From Jesus calming the waves in the storm on the sea of Galilee (Mark 4:35-41) to the waves Peter walked on when he was called from his boat to meet Jesus (Matthew 14:22-36). The wind and the waves of life scare me so easily sometimes – but the Lord says, “Do not be afraid.” He speaks to the storm on the sea of Galilee and says, “Quiet! Be still!” and the winds and the waves obey him. As I paint pieces like this, I love seeking to ground myself in the truth that I will not be overcome by the storms of life (however they look in each season), and my waves of emotions turn into wave-like marks of paint and pastel.
