Post Painterly Now

June 17 - August 31, 2021

In mid-century art movements, one school emerged that was defined by what it was not. Post-painterly abstract artists eschewed the emotive brushwork and dramatic drips of abstract-expressionism to deal more purely in shape, line and color. In 1964, Clement Greenberg brought together 31 such artists, headlined by the likes of Helen Frankenthaler, Morris Louis, and Kenneth Noland. These artists sought a kind of flatness, imbuing their canvases with color and form in soak stains and shape-oriented compositions rather than asserting it in superficial layers and strokes.

Presented by Sugarlift, Post Painterly Now surveys 20+ artists putting forth such shapes and colorfields in an age that’s perhaps even more accustomed to this flatness—viewing the world as we do through smartphone frames at scroll-speed. Post Painterly Now artists investigate whether color and shape contained within rectangle framing—on canvas, paper and yes, sometimes onscreen—can reclaim and put forth deep engagement again.
