For a summer exploding with art and color, High Line Nine and Sugarlift are welcoming four artists back to their white cube galleries, transforming them into live artist studio and exhibition spaces for the second annual HL9 x Sugarlift Summer Artist Residency program.
Artists Andrea von Bujdoss, Ryan Coleman, Edward Granger, and Lydia Baker will transform their Chelsea spaces with vibrant public murals and panoramic tableaus. Chelsea has long been the epicenter of art display. Now it’s a neighborhood rooted in creation, where New Yorkers have the opportunity to witness the artistic process unfold throughout the month of August. Visitors walking through the Sugarlift galleries at High Line Nine will see walls go from blank canvases to technicolor masterpieces over the span of four weeks.
About the Artists:
Andrea von Bujdoss Andrea von Bujdoss (AKA "Queen Andrea") is a NYC-based fine artist, graffiti artist, typographer and graphic designer. A die-hard native New Yorker raised in downtown Manhattan, Andrea has been deeply inspired by the urban landscape from an early age. Her style is consistently marked by a bold use of color, design and advanced typography. As a young teen part of a newer generation of early 1990's graffiti writers, she befriended some of the most prolific old school subway graffiti writers and diligently taught herself the complicated artform of graffiti by consistently practicing her letters and eventually developing her own unique style. She earned a BFA in Graphic Design and began a successful career, working for worldwide brands who appreciate her versatile and passionate knowledge of typography, branding and visual communication. Her work has impacted graffiti, streetwear and urban culture. Andrea has spent nearly 20 years perfecting her graffiti and typography skill sets and she is now an internationally notable female graffiti artist and muralist.
Edward Granger Edward Granger is one of the most sought-after abstract geometric artists in the industry, having built his reputation off his unique interpretation of color, light and shape to create a fantasy world that encourages playfulness and possibility into an often-anxious world. Taking inspiration from the cultural revolution sparked by Memphis Milano, his work seeks to challenge one’s physical and emotional state by using color as a healing tool that reintroduces individuals to imagination and discovery. Born in South Louisiana in 1989, Granger is a formerly trained architect, having received his master’s degree in Architecture from the University of Louisiana in 2012. His work has been exhibited all over the world, from New Orleans, New York, Berlin, Brisbane, Sofia, and Miami, and has been represented by The Fireplace Project in New York, Victori+MO in Brooklyn, and the Hue Gallery in Miami.
Ryan Coleman Ryan Coleman’s work combines gestural drawing and painting with carefully rendered elements inspired by classic comics and animation. Intertwining bold shapes, scribbled gestures and vivid color schemes, he reimagines entirely new compositions in his own distinctive form. Coleman specializes in large-scale custom murals in addition to studio work including paintings, drawings and sculptures. Coleman grew up in Jacksonville, FL, and received a BFA in Painting from the Atlanta College of Art in 2001. He honed his artistic talents as a street muralist throughout early adulthood and was heavily influenced artistically by his father, a retired professional cartoonist at Disney who previously inked a nationally syndicated newspaper comic strip for a number of years. Ryan Coleman worked briefly in animation at Cartoon Network after graduation and before moving to New York City where he served as a studio assistant to renowned pop artist Jeff Koons from 2003-2011. Currently, he lives and works in Atlanta, GA. His work is included in notable international collections at the High Museum of Art, Coca-Cola Corporate Headquarters, the Ritz-Carlton, NCR Global Headquarters, Canopy by Hilton, W Hotels, and Northside Hospital among others.
Lydia Baker Lydia Baker lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. She received a BFA in Communication Arts and Design from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2013 and an MFA in painting from the New York Academy of Art in 2020. She is a recipient of the New York Academy of Art’s Post-Graduate Chubb Fellowship, NYFA’s City Artist Corps Grant and an IEA Art Heals Grant. Her work has been featured by numerous publications including Art Maze Magazine, Friend of the Artist, Artsy and Juxtapoz. Baker has exhibited her work throughout the United States, recently at Sugarlift Gallery and through the Chubb Insurance Viewing Room at Art Basel Miami. In September 2021 her work will be on view at the Chubb Fellows exhibition in Wilkinson Gallery, at the New York Academy of Art. Baker looks forward to an artist residency at the Saltonstall Foundation in Ithaca, New York this coming fall.
