Textpectations: A Solo Exhibition by Lizzie Gill
Nov 13, 2015 to Dec 4, 2015
Sugarlift, 200 Morgan Ave, Bushwick, Brooklyn

About the exhibition
Textpectations was a solo show by Lizzie Gill about romance in the digital age. From Craigslist ads and instant messaging to texting and Tinder, the way people fall in love has changed remarkably, and so much of that courtship now happens on a screen, with endless room for misreading. Gill set the language of those exchanges against images of love and marriage from 1950s advertising, in collages and digital prints steeped in retro Americana.
Gill, born in 1989, grew up in New York State and studied fine art at Skidmore College. In 2013 she co-founded the Brooklyn Collage Collective, and earlier in 2015 she helped curate Sugarlift's Cut & Paste. The show gathered collages such as Tinderella, 3 New Matches and She Was Different (From Her Profile), digital prints including Hotline Bling, the Nightshift series and Poised & Ready, and a wall of small Sugarlift Minis.
The opening on Friday, November 13, 2015 drew a full room to the Bushwick gallery, with beer from Braven Brewing Company, and Nico Schinco photographed the night. The show ran through December 4.
