About the exhibition

Sugarlift's second collection was made with the Brooklyn Collage Collective, a group of collage artists from Brooklyn and the surrounding area that formed in late 2013. Thirteen artists, among them BCC co-founders Lizzie Gill and Morgan Lappin, made more than 40 new collages for the show, which opened at 200 Morgan Avenue on January 15, 2015, with food and drink from Arrogant Swine, Hops & Hocks and Brooklyn Winery.

The pieces ranged from hand-cut paper collages to digital pigment prints, from Jon Legere's seven Jetsemblages in acrylic and hand-cut paper to Linzi Silverman's hand-cut paper on acrylic and Richard Vergez's Medusa series. "Figures are suspended in other dimensions where natural laws like gravity do not apply, surrealist landscapes form multifaceted time warps, and images prompt the viewer to question their sense of time and culture," said Lizzie Gill of the work the collective made for Sugarlift.

The collaboration carried on beyond the walls. On Saturday, January 31, the collective filled two long tables with paper, glue, blades and old magazines for a Live Collage afternoon, and anyone who came could cut and paste alongside its members, with barbecue and beer from Arrogant Swine. On April 25, artists and friends returned for a second round that added screen printing with master printers Laura Charlton and Erik Hougen.
