"McCulloch" was painted during the 2020 pandemic lockdown. I had spent much of that time out at my parent's farm, working on the various projects that required attention. It became apparent that "fixing things" was something that I could do in the midst of a world that seemed unfixable. This chainsaw was one of those projects. In the process, I began to appreciate the beauty of the machine's design and the character of its surface. I brought it back to the studio, grease, oil and all, to paint it in natural light on a clean white ground. Suddenly this utilitarian object was something in which I could find a moment of true beauty.
