I often create self-portraits to express my variety of roles: woman, wife, mother etc. and a focus of mine is vulnerability. In this painting I show a fleshy female body bathed in natural light. She holds a single fern frond that seems both fragile and at the same time suggests Mother Earth. There is a quiet power in the strength of the light, shadow and flesh.
