Daybreak over the Waccasassa River, 2021
24" H x 36" W
This is a painting from my imagination depicting a primeval view of my favorite river. In the painting, light from the sunrise illuminates approaching clouds from thunderstorms that rake the coast virtually every summer morning. Ospreys wheel and a flock of egrets head for morning feeding grounds. A gator moves in the shadowy water along the shoreline. I make sketches and small paintings of the river from my canoe and then take them with written notes and compass readings into the studio for further development into other compositions. I also shoot video and photos of specific details for questions not answered in my outdoor studies.
