About the exhibition

Sugarlift launched its Black Lives Matter Art Benefit in June 2020, in the weeks after the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. Acknowledging that its own artist community was not as diverse as it should be, the gallery set out to examine and recommit to the diversity of its artists, curators and partners, and to put its full resources and marketing behind the artists leading the charge for social change. "We also believe in enacting change, not just posting about it," Sugarlift wrote when it announced the benefit.

The benefit was an ongoing online exhibition in which artists could donate up to 100% of the sales of their work to a social-justice cause important to them. Each artist chose the amount and the organization, and the rest went to the artist under Sugarlift's 2020 #allforartists pledge. Works featured at the launch included Maude White's The Rightseeker, Tiffany Bozic's Love, Garrett Cook's Katarra, Valeri Larko's Sign of the Times, Melanie Vote's Home, Christopher Herrera's Mad Mistakes and Daniel Loveridge's Brooklyn Door, with a painting by Michelle Doll as the cover image.
