About the exhibition
Biophilia is named for the human love of other living things, the instinct that has us cultivate flora and fauna, tend house plants and pets, and seek out nature or bring it inside. Sugarlift opened the exhibition online on May 21, 2020, as the weather warmed and New York continued to shelter in place, offering a daily nature prescription in paintings and drawings of everything from abundant landscapes to a few sprouts peeking out of city sidewalks.
Co-curated with the artist Dina Brodsky, the show brought together 42 artists, among them Alex Kanevsky, Alonsa Guevara, Alyssa Monks, Maude White, Tiffany Bozic, Valeri Larko and Zaria Forman. The work ranged from Alex Merritt's sunflower-lined path and Jennifer Gennari's tigers to Katie Whipple's falling bougainvillea. Visitors walked through it in a 3D virtual gallery, joined a curator-led tour on opening night and met the artists in a series of Instagram Live conversations.
Biophilia was the first exhibition of Sugarlift's #allforartists campaign, which sent 100% of each sale to the artists to support them through the pandemic.
