About the exhibition

Infinite Thread brought together three artists whose work is intuitively guided and grounded in introspection: Thorbjørn Bechmann, Maja Dlugolecki and Kenny Nguyen. Each has a distinct way of abstracting experience and memory into layered, meditative work.

Bechmann, who lives and works in Copenhagen, makes vivid stained canvases that recall color field painting and vibrate with hue, shadow and shade; one of his recent exhibitions, Constant Negotiation, was recognized by the Danish Arts Foundation for its investigation of gesture-based painting. Dlugolecki, based in Los Angeles, approaches painting as an extension of remembering, and in place of a daily journal she titles her works with thoughts she recorded in the past. Nguyen was born and raised in South Vietnam and worked as a fashion designer in Ho Chi Minh City before turning to art full time; based in Charlotte, North Carolina, he shapes silk into sculptural works that trace his own transformation and the meeting of past and present.

In the gallery, a monumental triptych by Dlugolecki filled one long wall, a pair of Bechmann's canvases hung on the next, and one of Nguyen's silk works shared the title wall. The show opened with a reception on March 31, 2022. While it was on view, Sugarlift brought the same three artists to Art Market San Francisco, and Dlugolecki and Nguyen both went on to solo exhibitions at the gallery in 2023.
