About the exhibition
Compendium was a solo exhibition of paintings by Timothy Powers Wilson, who grew up in rural southern Maine and keeps his studio on the Maine coast. The show was built around the rugged, moody Maine coastline and the land around it: rocky shores and gray water, marshes at sunset and fields under snow. Many of the landscapes were painted en plein air, carrying the light and weather of a single moment straight onto the canvas.
Studio pieces drawn from the same places hung alongside them, including figurative works such as a large figure painting in dark earth tones and a portrait in a gilded frame. Small paintings in weathered wood frames gathered in salon-style clusters, and a sunset marsh scene hung alone on the slate-blue title wall.
Wilson earned his BFA in illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2008 and, after a period in New York, returned to Maine. Since 2020 he has been an artist in residence with the Maine Coast Heritage Trust, working with the conservation group to help protect the places he paints. The exhibition was on view at Sugarlift at High Line Nine and online.
