About the exhibition

For one night only, on Tuesday, July 21, 2015, Sugarlift and Mom + Pop Music, Courtney Barnett's label, presented a pop-up exhibition of art by the Australian singer-songwriter at Ludlow Studios on the Lower East Side. It premiered photographs from her tour alongside artwork from her debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit.

The heart of the show was her shower series: photographs she took of the showers in the hotel rooms where she and her band stayed on tour, shown with handwritten lyrics from her songs. They hung side by side along one long wall, to convey time and the experience of life on the road, with one more in a tiled shower in the back room. Prints of her drawings of chairs, and studio photographs of Barnett and her band by Tajette O'Halloran, filled the rest of the space.

Torres and Speedy Ortiz's DJ SAD13, who were both joining Barnett for her show at Terminal 5, played DJ sets, Ilegal Mezcal and Lagunitas provided the drinks, and a share of the proceeds went to the Australian Marine Conservation Society. Sugarlift released three of the shower photographs as limited-edition prints, each with a certificate signed by Barnett, along with a set of 26 shower postcards.
