ME: An Exhibition of Contemporary Self-Portraiture
Jan 16, 2020 to Jan 30, 2020
Sugarlift at High Line Nine, 508 W 28th St, New York

About the exhibition
ME: An Exhibition of Contemporary Self-Portraiture put one question to 23 artists from around the world: who are you? Sugarlift and Juxtapoz presented the show together, curated by Sugarlift with Juxtapoz contributing editor Sasha Bogojev, and for two weeks in January 2020 it filled a skylit gallery at High Line Nine in Chelsea.
The paintings and drawings explored where psyche, mirror and other meet. As the press release asked, "Is your inner character revealed, like the ancient Greeks believed, by the composition of your features? Or does the answer have nothing to do with your face?" The answers came from painters including Aleah Chapin, Christian Rex van Minnen, Danica Lundy, Jenny Morgan, Paco Pomet, Prudence Flint, Jean-Pierre Roy and Tony Toscani.
The opening on January 16 drew a packed crowd. Over the following two weeks the gallery hosted a talk, The Self-Portrait: Antiquity to #Selfie, with the art and culture critic Carlo McCormick, Calvine Harvey, a historian and vice president of Old Masters painting at Sotheby's, and the painter Jenny Morgan; a self-portrait drink-and-draw night; and tours for young patron groups from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, the Neue Galerie and the Morgan Library.
