About the exhibition

A year after the first Mother and Child, children were still being separated from their parents at the US-Mexico border, so Sugarlift brought the benefit back on a bigger scale, this time co-curated and co-produced with Colossal. "Frankly, we did not want to do this exhibition again," Sugarlift and Colossal wrote in a letter to attendees.

Sixty artists donated work on the mother and child theme, from SWOON, Faith47, Icy & Sot and Seth Globepainter to longtime Sugarlift artists such as Nicolas V. Sanchez and Dina Brodsky. For one night, on July 15, 2019, their works hung salon style at 198 Allen Street on the Lower East Side, from London Kaye's crocheted Doves at the Border to SWOON's Birth, and that same evening they went on sale online at MotherAndChild.Shop. All of the proceeds went to three nonprofits providing direct aid and legal support to separated children and families: Kids in Need of Defense, The Young Center and The Florence Project.

Hundreds of people came through the open garage door that night for the art and an ice cream and beer bar. Sponsors Blue Marble, Kombrewcha and 198 Allen Street helped make the evening possible, and the works stayed on sale online for two more weeks.
